AWB Melodies Visits the Lewis Katz School of Medicine
On October 21st, the AWB Melodies program, our disability awareness education outreach program, presented to the second-year medical students at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. The presentation involved a panel of AWB actors giving firsthand life experience on what it is like to be a patient with a disability. The students were invited to complete sensitivity activities like opening a door in a wheelchair, walking utilizing sighted guide, and more. These sensitivity activities allowed the students to learn what life may be like from the perspective of someone with a disability. Additionally, to show Acting Without Boundaries’ main mission of emphasizing ability, the actors displayed some of their talents through song. The students at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine as well as AWB actors and staff had a wonderful time connecting, sharing, and learning from one another. We hope that the students will be able to utilize these new lessons as they go on to be the next generation of doctors healing, treating, and saving lives.
Here is some feedback we received from the students:
“It was so amazing to hear about their experiences and they gave such amazing and tangible advice on how to approach our patients with disabilities in the future.”
“Getting to hear everyone’s perspective and having them be so vulnerable and open about their feelings and experiences. Love that these talks were also interposed with performances that truly highlighted for me ways that people with disabilities experience joy in the activities they do and how they do them.”
“My favorite part was listening to all of the different experiences of the panelists and their suggestions for the future. Their optimism makes me feel more confident working with patients with disabilities in the future.”

AWB relies on volunteers.
The first Sunday of every month volunteers assist our actors at workshops as they learn their lines and rehearse their parts. Our most dedicated volunteers support our actors throughout the year and are a part of the yearly performance. There are opportunities for people who want a creative outlet through set design, props and costume development. Great for early teens, adults and seniors!
